Most people regard the kitchen as the heart of the home but maybe only buy one kitchen in a lifetime. Whether they have moved to a larger home, downsized, or are renovating once children have grown up, it’s a rare event. It is also a major purchase – and an incredibly personal one.
Deson Kitchens is a relatively new name but a truly international company. The first UK branch opened last year in Winchester under principal owner and director Rachel Gao-Wang, supported by fellow director Robert Bentley. Deson blends modern elegant design trends with huge manufacturing capability based in Qingdao, China. The group employs more than 600 people with 500 franchise stores around the world.
Deson designs, manufactures, supplies and installs high quality bespoke kitchens which have a distinct edge over high street competitors. They are supplied directly from the manufacturer and designed and built to customer’s exact requirements. A Deson kitchen maximises the use of space, ensuring a clean, contemporary look yet without carrying a premium price tag. Deson uses high quality board in all products as standard and offers customers life warranty on kitchen installations.
The business actually has its roots in 19th century Germany with an early kitchen manufacturer. From this, a 21st century collaboration with a team of designers and craftsmen from China resulted in a blend of traditions, heritage and skills. Deson’s factory now produces over 2,000 kitchens per month.
What Makes Deson Different
Rachel explains, “What differentiates us is the reinforced structure, comprising aluminium beams in every unit. Think of it like a house structure, it’s robust and can take stoneware worktops. Experienced fitters spot this difference immediately. Design is not just about looks, but structure.”
“We can speed up orders because of our access to Chinese factory resources. We use compressed board and materials from Germany, which is also where the design is undertaken,” said Rachel. Deson Kitchens, which has a 2,000 sq ft showroom and UK head office on the St Martins Trading Estate, undertakes a variety of projects in and around Winchester, but works to an approximate drive time of two hours to clients’ homes, easily covering all of Hampshire.
With three teams of fitters, Rachel is finding the lack of distributor mark up a real winner with people, regardless of their budget. She prides herself of not only being ‘nice and approachable’, but also on making every effort to find a kitchen solution which works when she has to work around a tight budget.
“It’s really important to get it right. We try to suggest useful changes yet still provide what the customer is seeking. This is something they appreciate and which builds our reputation.”
Planning a new Kitchen as the Heart of the Home
Autumn is a time when people set home project goals, perhaps with some new ideas from their holidays. One of these might be planning a new kitchen for after Christmas.
“We’re very flexible,” concluded Rachel. “We work to our customers timeframe, go through every stage, costing every item and working closely to make a desired new kitchen something which takes pride of place as the heart of the home.”
